VIDEO: Reading Rainbow

As students come in, show
Reading Rainbow: 28 minute video "Seashore Surprises" -- excellent!

Tongue twister:

She sells sea shells
By the seashore.
The shells she sells,
Are surely seashells.
So if she sells shells,
On the seashore,
I'm sure she sells,
Seashore shells.

Read a Book

(if they've got patience -- maybe instead of the individual videos above): Does anyone know where a hermit crab goes?

Discussion: where do crabs live, what animals live in shells, etc.
(Note: hermit crab -- 10 legs, 2 eyes and 2 sets of antennae. Front legs = grasping claw.

Here's a drawing of what a hermit crab looks like:

SHELL ACTIVITIES

Shells under the microscope
Look at shells and sand under the microscope

Hammer some shells into sand?
Need hammer, shells and cardboard from shop to hammer on.

Paint shells:
http://alphamom.com/family-fun/crafts/sea-shell-art/
(Great photos!)
  • Glue sand onto paper plate
  • Paint shells with watered down acrylic paint and brushes (put cloths over the table)
  • After LEGO's, shells can be glued onto paint if they want to...

SWITCH TO GEARS...

Review simple machines from last week's "The 3 pigs and the scientific wolf"
Look at simple machines page to figure out which ones are which

Talk about posters of simple machines

Gears:
Focus on direction of movement when you have 2 or 3 gears
Use fingers to show gears and which direction they move

Build some gears with idlers

(Note: Good options here from the LEGO Education Simple Machines kit)
